Rough Creek Lodge

I was invited to enjoy a retreat at Rough Creek Lodge right before Thanksgiving of this year.  I won't share the details of my agenda there but I will tell you about the ranch and all of the amenities it has.  Rough Creek is the ultimate in Texas style, rustic luxury and sophistication.

Upon entering into the ranch from the main highway, you are welcomed with a gorgeous stone and iron gate and a long driveway up to the main lodge. Along the drive way you will be greeted by black Angus cattle, a few prairie dogs, and of course cowboys corralling the herd.

The main lodge is always buzzing with friendly staff to give you a warm Texas welcome.  The reception desk and gift shop make up the small lobby before you enter into the dining area that really is the best feature of the lodge.

The main dining area features an enormous stone fireplace that towers above the hand scraped reclaimed wood floors, and there is always a fire going. The dining room also overlooks the Texas prairie with full windows from floor to ceiling illuminating the area with gorgeous natural light.  With oversized tables and chairs, you'll always fine a comfortable seat with pillows whether enjoying the breakfast buffet, or eating a hearty dinner.

Speaking of dinner, Rough Creek has it's own Chef, Gerard Thompson.  His philosophy on food is one that I love, "Make the meal memorable." Well said Chef.  With each meal and dinner presentation you are left perfectly portioned, and with numerous choices to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters.  The Chef also does a wonderful job catering to the needs of gluten-free or vegetarian guests.  You can take a look at the seasonal menu here

Upstairs is a small loft area for enjoying cocktails from the bar, informal meetings, or playing games.

On the other side of the windows in the outdoor patio area are 3 to 5 fire pits and a stone fireplace, making sure that during the evening the area is well lit, and heated for their guests.  It is THE perfect spot to enjoy a glass of wine while watching the sunset.  Speaking of sunsets...there is NOTHING like a Texas sunset.

Just down from the patio there is a pool and cabana, along with the Rough Creek Spa.  If you do nothing else during your visit, you must visit the spa.  The professional staff and personal hospitality will leave you coming back time and time again. The full menu of their services range from mani/pedis, facials, massages, and more.  The spa caters to both men and women with personal robes, spa shoes, lockers (with your name), and don't forget to relax in their tranquility room with hot tea and homemade dried fruit from the Chef. Wow.

Rough Creek is known for much more than their spa.  The lodge features top-rated hunting expeditions: deer, hog, duck, turkey, and exotics just to wet your appetite.  You can also try their shooting sports including sporting clays, five stand, and their tactical course for the more advanced.  If that doesn't interest you, how about guided horseback riding, fishing on the lake, tennis, mule riding, paintball, and hiking on their nature trail for some fun recreation?!

And after you have had a full day of fun, worked up a big appetite, and enjoyed a great meal, you can steal away to your rustic suite that feels like home.  Rough Creek features a range of room options suited for groups, families, individuals and couples.

You will never want to get out of this bed - so comfortable!

The rooms are landed on a double open breeze way and each suite welcomes you with a boot scraper outside your door so you won't track in any mud. Only in Texas.

Every room has a balcony overlooking the lake and prairie land with oversized rocking chairs. Perfect place to have that morning cup of coffee and watch the sun rise.

Oh and yes, there are presidential suites like this one...where George and Barbara stay when they make a visit.

Overall if you are looking for the ultimate Texas retreat that is just far enough out of the DFW metroplex, then look no further.  Rough Creek is rustic sophistication with a twist of Texas class.

(This blog is not an advertisement for Rough Creek, but my own personal opinion of the Lodge during my visit.)
