Ode to Whole Foods...

Why is it that shopping at Whole Foods can make you feel better about yourself, and like you might possibly be better than everyone else?  C'mon, let's be honest.  You know you think the same thing!  Shopping with those earth-muffins, tree-huggers, and organic hippies makes you feel cool...trendy...like you are in the most exclusive-awesome club in the world! Ok, well maybe that's just me.

I actually only discovered Whole Foods just last year.  The only world of high-end super-marketing I had ever experienced was Central Market.  Not that CM is bad or anything.  It's just that it's more like a human maze than it is a super market.

After a 21-day fast towards the beginning of the year I watched 2 documentaries that changed our world.  The first was "No Impact Man"

and the other was "Food Inc."

To make a long story short... we went organic! Grant it, going organic is a lot more expensive, but the benefits that you reap from it are sooooo worth it! I could probably write an even longer blog on Food Inc. but I must pay my tribute to the store we love most.

When Husband and I first got married he said he HATED, LOATHED grocery shopping and vowed that he would never go with me.  Ever since Whole Foods has come into our lives that has all changed.

Gong to WF these days requires at least a 2 to 3 hour time span.  We CAN NOT rush our shopping adventure by any means!  We need to give ourselves time to read the labels, to walk up and down the aisles multiple times, or to meet a new earth-muffin-hippy friend.  We dress as comfortable as possible and  attempt at a tinge of "rock-star, slash, trendy, slash, organic-foodies-that-know-what-we-are-doing" to our style, and we are set for our trip! (Oh yes on a side-note because I'm almost sure that you noticed: for fun I call Husband "Hizzle"...he calls me "Wizzle." #yesweareweirdandweownit)
Here are the Top 10 Reasons Why I Heart Whole Foods:

1.)  You automatically feel like you are in an exclusive club of the healthiest people on earth.  They all might look a little weird, but they are cool.  Trust me.

2.)  Organic, organic, organic.  If it's not organic, it's natural.  If it's not natural it's gluten-free.  And if it's not one of those...then go to Walmart.

3.)  They have really cool shopping bags like these that make you want to save the WORLD! And you get a discount if you bring them in and use them to carry out your goodies.

4.)  They reserve special parking spaces for hybrids...ok this is actually one thing that I just think is weird. But eh...it made the list.

5.)  The employees are absolutely wonderful and so kind to you.  At the Whole Foods on 75 & Park in Dallas there is a wonderful man named Danny at the meat counter that you just have to meet.  He's absolutely delightful and knows his meats!

6.) Where else in the world can you grocery shop while sipping on a robust chardonnay? Answer: Whole Foods. Done!

7.)  Departments in Whole Foods that I could spend days in: Wine, Floral, Cheese, and Produce. They always carry the best of the best, of the most unique products in them.

8.)  I learn something new about food every time I visit.

9.)  Great people watching.  Wether it's the cross-dresser and his boyfriend, or the earth-muffin yoga instructor that doesn't shave her arm pits, you can catch some seriously great people watching while you are picking up your organic, cage free eggs that you love so much.

10.)  They encourage the purchase of local produce from local farmers.  What a better way to support your community than with those yummy white onions that old farmer brown is growing right down the road!

One of my recommendations for people who want to eat organic but just don't want to fork over the funds to truly go ALL organic is to start with animal products.  Organic chicken, beef, milk, eggs are all items that are still very reasonably priced at Whole Foods and it can get you started on to a better path of eating well.  No hormones-yippeee!
